Located in the heart of Norwich Town Centre by the River Wensum, The Ribs of Beef proudly describes itself as a “Real Ale Pub By The River.” However, given its impressive selection of quality craft beers, both on hand pump and in keg and cans, we’d argue that “Craft Beer Pub By The River” would be a more fitting title.
Boasting seven cask ale hand pumps, four craft keg pumps, two ciders, and a selection of macro lagers to satisfy all tastes, The Ribs of Beef offers an excellent range and variety of drinks.

During our recent visit, we were thrilled to find DEYA’s ‘Steady Rolling Man’ on cask —a rare treat that should be considered almost mandatory when available. A Duration cask beer was also on hand-pump, alongside some outstanding keg selections from GlassHouse, DEYA, and Yonder Brewing.
As an Untappd verified venue, The Ribs of Beef allows visitors to check their beer selection in advance, ensuring there’s always something enticing to try.
The pub itself exudes the charm of a classic British ale house, featuring rich wood paneling, a spacious bar, and numerous cozy nooks perfect for enjoying a pint. The building dates back to the 14th century and has had various uses over the centuries before officially becoming an alehouse in 1743 under the management of Thomas and Mary Holland. One of its standout features is the stunning French pewter bar, complemented by a recently uncovered medieval wall, a testament to the pub’s deep rooted history.

For those looking to pair their drinks with a bite to eat, The Ribs of Beef serves pizza seven days a week—though, ironically, no actual ribs of beef! The pub also hosts a variety of events, including a regular pub quiz, live music, and comedy nights, adding to its lively and welcoming atmosphere.
The outdoor terrace overlooking the River Wensum is a real gem, offering a scenic and relaxing spot to enjoy a drink while watching the world go by. Whether you’re after a wellkept real ale, a top-tier craft beer, or just a great place to unwind, The Ribs of Beef remains one of Norwich’s most beloved pubs.
