Let’s start this week with a forecast from the pantomime villains of the high street JDWetherspoon, who predict that rising staffing costs triggered by the upcoming National Insurance increases will hit their bottom line to the tune of £60M per year.

Hospitality Sector Insolvencies Increase
On a similar topic, tax firm RSM UK report that Hospitality Sector insolvencies increased 21% month on month in January. Although the start of the year is notoriously tough for the sector; the report notes that this was a 3% increase on the same period from 2024.

Gen Z Do Love Boose
Here is an interesting survey from food service marketing agency OMNE, who reported that contrary to expectations, Gen Z (people currently aged (16-29) love consuming alcohol and visiting hospitality venues. However, this demographic is very demanding with it’s expectations, and generally frugal with their spending.
