Spirits Duty Revenue Drops
Let’s start with a report from The Drinks Business which quoted HMRC data showing that duty revenue from spirits dropped by almost £300M in the year to 31st July 2024, compared to the previous year following the 10.1% increase in spirits duty introduced in Aug 2023. A stark reminder that alcohol duty is not the unstoppable gravy-train that Government’s seem to think it is!

Oregon Hop Harvest Declines
Worrying news from Oregon as the hop harvest begins. It turns out that they planted 18% less hop-acreage across the state this year, to account for falling demand from both domestic and international breweries.

Youngsters Drinking Less Alcohol
The Morning Advertiser quotes a CGA survey showing on-premise alcohol consumption has dropped 23%, with the under-24’s leading the temperance movement. It did however show that the youngsters are still regularly visiting hospitality venues; hence the scramble to provide Lo and No alcohol beverage options.
