New Kernel Taproom

The Kernel Taproom, 132 Spa Rd, London SE16 3AE
Last weekend’s annual pilgrimage to the Bermondsey Beer Mile began with an unexpected twist: discovering that The Kernel’s beloved Arch 7 taproom was closed. Thankfully, a helpful sign directed us to their brand-new taproom just around the corner. And a pleasant discovery it was too.

While the new location may lack the rustic charm of the railway arch setting, it more than compensates with its modern and thoughtfully designed space. Situated in a spacious, glass-fronted building, the taproom retains The Kernel’s trademark understated style.

With its soft lighting, wooden tables, chairs, and panelling, the contemporary decor exudes warmth and simplicity. At approximately double the size of the original taproom, there is plenty of room to sit back, relax, and enjoy the beer.

The bar is a focal point, boasting 24 craft keg taps primarily featuring Kernel’s freshest beers, alongside two cask pumps, cider, wine, and soft drinks. The beer options are clearly displayed, and the variety is impressive—everything from light, sessionable table beers to robust imperial stouts. For those wanting to take the experience home, a wide range of Kernel’s bottled beers is available for takeaway.

One exciting addition to the new space is the enhanced food offering. The kitchen is now home to Yagi Izakaya, serving up Japanese-inspired comfort food like gyoza, udon, and karaage—a fantastic complement to Kernel’s beers.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or visiting for the first time, The Kernel’s new taproom is a must-visit spot on the Beer Mile. Its updated ambiance and expanded amenities create a perfect environment for enjoying some of London’s finest craft beer.
The Kernel has managed to evolve while staying true to its core ethos, making this new taproom a worthy start (or end) to your beer journey. Cheers!
