It’s an old adage that the only thing that really matters when it comes to real estate is location, location, location. As you approach the superb Brew York facilities in York, it is clear that this rule was well understood by Lee, Wayne and the Team.

Brew York can confidently claim to have the biggest and best City centre taproom facility in the UK, and York is not just any old City. It is arguably Britain’s best preserved historic City, and Brew York have a superb riverfront location just to the South of the City centre, less than 100 yards from Fossgate – which would be in the conversation for coolest restaurant-street in the Country.

They are based in two adjacent maltings warehouses, which they have skillfully re-developed in a series of iterations over the past five years. The first building contains the original brewery (now complemented and somewhat superseded by the much larger facility opened in the outskirts of the City early in 2020) as well as the Taproom, which is fitted out like a really nice traditional pub, with a great mix of up to seven cask and ten keg beers to choose from. To the rear of the Taproom is a delightful river terrace, offering stunning views over the River Foss to the historic Victorian Rowntree’s Wharf.

Also tucked away at the back of the Taproom is a separate Cocktail Bar/Events space.

In 2018 Brew York entered into a Crowd Fund campaign to enable them to expand into the adjacent warehouse, where they have built a huge Beer Hall with a 40-tap bar and plenty of communal bench seating. The Beer Hall includes a fabulous Asian Street Food restaurant, offering a very reasonably priced selection of snacks and meals.

To round off the amazing choice of hospitality spaces, Brew York also have a large terrace area to the front of the Brewery, offering both covered and open seating options. This all adds up space for over 400 people indoors across the two venues and perhaps another 100 or so outdoors.

This ensemble experience is almost like five separate Taproom experiences (well maybe four, as the Cocktail Bar is typically only open for special events), and has something to please any Craft Beer fan.

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of a visit to Brew York, I suggest that you add it to your urgent to-do list for 2022.
